For some, winter might mean a time for hibernation, but Lowe Alpine and the BMC’s latest competition, Make Winter Count (#MakeWinterCount), is ready to give you the tools and skills you need for more wintry adventures outdoors.
While many hikers will head for the hills in the summer, Lowe Alpine and the British Mountaineering Council want to see more hikers outdoors year-round. With the new Make Winter Count competition, the two have teamed up to address the biggest obstacles stopping people from hiking in winter: gear and skills.
Make Winter Count Competition Details and Prizes
From November until the end of February, hikers can add the #MakeWinterCount hashtag to their Twitter and Instagram posts to be in for a chance to win some nifty prizes. The posts should highlight how you have made the most of a winter adventure outdoors. There’s a range of prizes to be won, and winners will be announced at the end of the competition.
Check out last year’s winner, Liam Campbell, with mountaineer legend Alan Cave in the video below:

Learn New Winter Skills
Wondering whether you have the right skills to hike in winter? The BMC YouTube channel covers everything from choosing the right equipment to climbing on steep ice. Anything and everything you could want to know about winter hiking can be found in those videos.
The BMC also organises a series of talks on winter hiking throughout the UK around November. These are the perfect chance to learn a new skill before going out and practicing it yourself! Check the BMC’s Make Winter Count page for more information and details of 2020 events.
