….Celebrate the First Summit of Everest
May 29th marks the 60th anniversary of the first successful summit of Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. And whilst most of us would struggle to celebrate via Kenton Cool’s ‘tri-umph’, the Royal Geographic Society and Oxo Gallery have created a more comfortable celebration of this conquest in British mountaineering.
Pay a visit to the IBS building at the Royal Geographic Society’s headquarters in Kensington and explore their exhibition Innovation Everest. Featuring an eclectic display of snapshots of memorabilia from the expedition , the exhibition explores the technology and ingenuity that over 150 (mainly British) government departments, research bodies, designers, and manufacturers devoted into making the expedition a success. Beyond the summit of Everest the exhibition also recalls the human element of the exhibition, highlighting correspondence between the expedition leaders and suppliers over the performance of the gear. A particularly moving tribute is the adaption of the expedition technology in different fields, such as the oxygen apparatus enabling people from all over the world suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease to breathe easier.
See Everest through the eyes of the expedition team with the photography exhibition Everest 1953 at the Oxo Gallery. The images on display are a small collection of the photography catalogue containing over 2,000 images taken during the 1951-1953 expedition, highlighting the sheer cliffs, frozen landscapes, and captured moments of the group during their time on the mountain. Those wanting to bring the mountain to Mohammed can purchase a print from the 47 on display at the gallery; otherwise the photography book Everest, published by the RGS to celebrate the 60th anniversary, provides the perfect coffee –table book inspiration for your next trip to the mountains.
